AI automation definition
What is Human-in-the-loop automation?
Human-in-the-loop automation uses AI for repeatable steps while routing sensitive, unusual, or high-risk decisions to a person for review.
Plain-English definition
How it works in practice
This pattern is useful when a workflow can be mostly automated but still needs human judgment for exceptions, approvals, or customer-sensitive situations.
Examples include support escalations, pricing exceptions, medical or legal questions, upset callers, refund disputes, and unusual sales requests.
Human-in-the-loop design makes automation safer because it defines what the system can do, what it cannot do, and when a person must step in.
